Dental bonding is a procedure in which a tooth-coloured composite material is applied to a natural tooth and hardened with a special light which ultimately “bonds” (sticks) the material to the tooth to restore or improve a person’s smile.
Dental bonding is very well suited to small cosmetic changes, for temporary correction of cosmetic defects, and for correction of teeth in areas of very low bite pressure (for example, front teeth). At Portobello Dental Clinic we will take the time to explain the various options available to you, and after dental/personal/lifestyle discussions, we will help you make your decision.
It can be used:
- To repair and restore the appearance and shape of decayed teeth.
- To repair chipped or cracked teeth
- To improve the appearance of discoloured teeth
- To close spaces between teeth.
- To make teeth look longer.
- To change the shape of teeth.
- As a cosmetic alternative to amalgam fillings.
- To protect a portion of the tooth’s root that has been exposed when gums recede
Advantages of dental bonding:
Dental bonding for cosmetic purposes (as opposed to treatment of dental decay) involves minimal tooth preparation, and therefore is very conservative of tooth substance. Little or no enamel removal is required, thereby leaving your tooth strong and intact.
Bonding can generally be done in one visit.
It is among the least expensive of the various cosmetic dental procedures. It does not incur laboratory fees unlike veneers and crowns (these are customised porcelain tooth coverings that must be manufactured in a dental laboratory).
Unless dental bonding is being performed to fill a decayed tooth, local anaesthestic usually not required.
Disadvantages of dental bonding:
Although the material used in dental bonding is somewhat stain resistant, it does not resist stains as well as crowns.
Another disadvantage is that the bonding materials do not last as long nor are they as strong as other restorative procedures, such as crowns, veneers, or other types of dental restorations.
