At Banstead Dental Care we promote preventive dentistry starting as soon as your child’s teeth begin to appear which can be from as early as 4 months to as late as 18 months.
Teaching your child good oral hygiene at a young age is an investment in their health that will stay with them for life. It can be useful to set a good example by taking care of your own teeth and by having regular dental check-ups.
We offer reduced private fees for children, and also a care plan to spread costs and reduce fees further.
For your child’s first visit, it is best for Mum/Dad to explain beforehand that during this examination all we will do is count the child’s teeth, and to avoid using emotive phrases such as “it won’t hurt” to describe what we do.
During each dental examination, we will speak with the parents and the child together and offer dietary advice (and analysis if the parent wishes), and suggest an age appropriate oral hygiene regime.
Occasionally, we might have to refer your child to a specialist children’s dentist-called a Paedodontist, if their treatment requirements necessitates this, and we generally refer all paediatric alignment problems to an Orthodontist.
Our Dentists and Hygienists can teach you about helping your children look after their teeth, brushing techniques, diet advice and much more.
To help your children protect their teeth and gums and reduce their risk of getting cavities, teach them to follow these steps:
-
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque-the sticky film on teeth that’s the main cause of tooth decay.
-
Eat a well-balanced diet that limits starchy or sugary foods, which produce plaque acids that cause tooth decay. When you do eat these foods, try to eat them with your meal instead of as a snack as this limits the time the teeth are exposed to acids produced by plaque bacteria.
-
Take your child to our dentist for regular check-ups.
