A dental bridge is usually used where there are a small number of teeth to replace, or when the missing teeth are only on one side of the mouth. Bridges are usually made of a precious metal base, with porcelain placed over the metal to match the shade and shape of the teeth beside the gap.
There are a number of types or design of bridge, but broadly speaking they fall into 2 categories:
- Conventional bridges.
- Good cosmetics
- Strong
- Require extensive preparation (removal of enamel) from adjacent supporting teeth
Adhesive bridges.
Compared to conventional bridges these require less preparation and so are kinder to adjacent teeth typically cost less rely completely on the adhesive used to bond them in, so they are not as robust have good cosmetics, but not as good as conventional bridges.
